Healing Is Not Linear — And That Is Okay

There is a moment in almost every healing journey where you think you have finally turned the corner — and then something happens. A song. A memory. A date on the calendar. And suddenly you feel like you are right back where you started.

I want you to know something: that is not failure. That is healing.

Why we expect healing to feel like a straight line

We live in a culture that loves a clean narrative. We want the before and the after, the wound and the scar, the problem and the resolution. We want to be able to point to a moment and say, "That is when things changed." And sometimes, healing does have a moment like that. But more often, it looks like something messier and more beautiful.

"Healing is not the absence of pain. It is learning to carry your story without being crushed by it."

What God says about the process

Scripture is full of people whose healing was not linear. David cried out to God in the Psalms from what sounds like the same dark place — again and again. Job questioned and grieved and questioned again before he found solid ground. Even Paul, who had encountered the risen Christ personally, wrote about a thorn that God did not remove.

None of these stories look like a clean upward climb. They look like the real thing: two steps forward, one step back, a season of light, a season of quiet darkness, and through it all — a God who does not leave.

What to do on the days that feel like backward steps

On the days where it feels like nothing has changed — or worse, like you have gone backward — here are three things worth remembering:

  • Feeling is not the same as fact. The fact that you feel like you are back at square one does not mean you are. Healing happens in layers, and sometimes revisiting a layer is how you actually process it fully.
  • God's presence is not dependent on your progress. He is not waiting for you to get better before He shows up. He is with you in the hard day just as much as the good one.
  • The hard day is not evidence that you are broken beyond repair. It is evidence that you are human — and that the work of healing is real, which means it takes time.

Be gentle with yourself today. The fact that you are here — reading, reaching, trying — is enough. You are still standing. And that matters more than you know.
